Goalkeeper Adrianna Franch became the first US women’s national team player to be traded since winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics when she moved from the Portland Timbers to Kansas City for goalkeeper Abby Smith and $ 150,000 Allotment funds have been sent. Franch was recovering from a knee injury sustained in 2020 to join the Olympic team and was called up to the last two games in Japan after starter Alyssa Naeher was injured. Kansas City Sporting Director Christian Lavers described Naeher as « one of the best goalkeepers who have ever played in the NWSL ». Franch, who is from Salina, Kansas, and visited the state of Oklahoma, won the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year with the Thorns in 2017 and 2018, who won the 2017 NWSL Championship with her in goal. She was the sixth overall pick in the first NWSL Draft, hit by the Western New York Flash in 2013. The Flash won the NWSL Shield and reached the first NWSL championship game. After spending the 2015 season at Avaldsnes IL in Norway, Orlando Pride owned their NWSL rights and sent them, Emily Sonnett and Meghan Klingenberg to Portland for Alex Morgan.
