CM – Olympic champion Mack Horton missed Australian swim team over 400m freestyle free

Mack Horton, the Rio 400m freestyle Olympic champion, failed to make it onto the Australian swim team for Tokyo at the event.

Horton, a 25-year-old from Melbourne, was on Saturday’s opening night third in the Olympic Trials in Adelaide. The first two made the team.

Elijah Winnington won in 3: 42.65 and prevailed with 0.62 ahead of Jack McLoughlin. Horton, who won the Rio Olympics in 3: 41.55, touched in 3: 43.92. « I was just on the wrong side of the pool, breathing wrong, I literally gave it my all, » said Horton, who swam the last length of the pool and breathed to the opposite side from Winnington and McLoughlin, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “Every time you turn into the 300m, you always ask yourself whether there is 100m left. That was the same today, clearly not enough. ”

In 2016, Horton was the first Australian in Rio to win an individual Olympic swimming title in the 1500m freestyle since Grant Hackett at the 2004 Athens Games.

Horton however, is better known for a feud with Chinese silver medalist Sun Yang, who may miss Tokyo altogether. Horton can later field the Australian team at trials in other events.

The Horton-Sun feud ignited at the Olympic Games in Rio. Horton described Sun as a « drug fraudster » before the 400m free final. Sun was suspended for three months in 2014 because of a banned stimulant, although the punishment was announced by Chinese officials only after his service.

At the 2019 World Cup, the rivalry resumed. Sun won the 400m free run, Horton took silver on a repeat of the 2017 World Cup podium.

Unlike 2017, Horton refused to stand on the podium for the Chinese anthem and did not seem to shake Sun’s hand. For the usual photos after the medal ceremony, he stood a step away from Sun and bronze medalist Gabriele Detti of Italy.

« Frustration, I think you know what respect, » Horton told media in Gwangju, South Korea. “I think you know what the rivalry is like. … His actions, and how I appreciate how they were handled, speak louder than anything I’ll ever say. ”At the time, Sun was standing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). There were reports that he and his security guard smashed an ampoule of the swimmer’s blood with a hammer in a clash with drug testers in September 2018.

Sun was suspended for eight years in February 2020, but a Swiss court overturned in December The ban and returned the case to the Sports Arbitration Court a second time, but with a different chairman of the judges.

The verdict of the Swiss court appeared to be based on an objection by Sun’s lawyers against the chairman of the three-person panel, the former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

Federal judges held the guilty verdict uncertain because Frattini showed anti-Chinese bias on social media comments.

The court held the private hearing on May 25-27 via video connection. A new CAS ruling is expected ahead of the Tokyo Olympics opening on July 23rd.
