CM – Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020: Sumit Nagal defeats Denis Istomin and is only the third Indian to win the men’s singles


Nagal defeated Istomin 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes in 10th place at the Ariake Tennis Center to prepare for a second round with world number runner-up Daniil Medvedev.

Tokyo: Sumit Nagal was only the third Indian to win a men’s singles at the Olympic Games on Saturday, and the first in 25 years when he overtook Denis Istomin in the set of three at the Tokyo Games.

Nagal defeated Istomin 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes in 10th place at the Ariake Tennis Center to prepare a second round with world number two Daniil Medvedev.

Zeeshan Ali was the one first Indian to win an individual match at the Seoul Games in 1988 when he defeated Victo Caballero from Paraguay.

Then the legendary Leander Paes won the historic bronze in the men’s singles against the Brazilian Fernando Meligeni at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

No Indian was able to win an individual match after Paes’ heroic deed, even if Somdev Devvarman and Vishnu Vardhan competed in the London 2012 Games, but failed to overcome the first-round hurdle.

The 23- year old Nagal who was not at his best in the Sp iele came, had a break chance in the sixth game of the opening set, but couldn’t take it.

However, the Indian didn’t miss the opportunity when Istomin waited to stay in the set.

An early break brought Nagal 2-0 lead in the second set, in which he took a 4-1 lead, but maybe nerves got the upper hand when he served 5-3 for the match and dropped his serve.

Nagal is now faced with a Herculean task, because he will meet the runner-up at the Australian Open, Medvedev, who defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bubilk with 6-4 7-6 (8).

Nagal, who qualified for the games last week after extensive cancellations, faced the lower-ranking Uzbeks in the draw on Thursday.

The wrestling competition in 18 weight classes – six each in Freestyle, Women and Greco Roman – begins on August 1st. India will field seven wrestlers, including four women.
