The United States repeated themselves as gold medalists in the men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay on Sunday evening.
The quartet of Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker and Zach Apple stormed up with a time of 3: 08.97 first place.
Sunday’s victory marked the first gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics for Dressel, who could be one of the most highly decorated athletes for the next two weeks.
The United States has Italy and Australia defeated to take first place. The Americans have now won five overall gold medals in Japan, two of them in men’s swimming.

The United States led the race for much of the 400 meters.
Dressel made it possible for the Americans to hold their own from the front of the field by turning in a first leg of 47.26 seconds.Dressel set the second best time of the four swimmers of his relay. The fastest number came from anchor Zach Apple.
Apple stormed the pool in 46.69 seconds to create some separation between the Americans, Italy and Australia.
The US is having a qualifying time that Was more than a second worse than Italy, made it into the final, but the team from the preliminary round did not let Dressel swim a leg and 50-meter freestyle. He could also be involved in individual relays.
Italy did not have a swimmer under 47 seconds, like Apple, but all four competitors set times under 48 seconds.
The fastest lap in the pool was set by Australian anchor Kyle Chalmers, who completed the 100 meters in 46.44 seconds.
NBC Sports ‘Nick Zaccardi pointed out how fast Chalmers’ time was and what it means for the men’s 100 meters freestyle final.
Gold for Caeleb Dressel and the US But Australian anchor Kyle Chalmers shares 46.44, which I think is number 2 in history behind Jason Lezak’s 46.06 from 2008 (others were intermediate between Lezak and Chalmers times). The individual 100m free will be intense.
As Fox Sports Australia pointed out, the Aussies were sixth when Chalmers stepped into the pool and he brought them back to a bronze medal.

The total time of the USA was one second faster than that of the gold-winning team from Rio de Janeiro.
Dressel was the only remnant of the unit who swam 3: 09.92 to win gold in Rio. Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian were on that roster.
The United States now has five gold medals from four different sports. The relay win on Sunday made swimming the first multi-gold sport for the Americans in Tokyo.
