Craig Overton accepted that the Headingley Test would be « a real junk » unless England can stop India’s progress when they unwrap the new ball on day four The third match of the LV = Insurance Series looked like a walkover as India started their second innings 354 back and a score of 78 fresh in their heads.

But over the course of 80 carefully managed overs on day three, the tourists fought their way back into the game with a score of 215 for two. The odds are still against them, with a 139 deficit to be fixed before they even think of asking England to beat again, but the firepower is there.

Cheteshwar Pujara is on 91 and not off, while Virat Kohli is ominously placed on 45no and both men looked like they were about to shake off some indifferent form. But the prospect of getting their hands on a fresh dukes ball as soon as play resumes is a potential asset for Joe Root’s men.

« We’re still in a good or great position in this one Play and especially with a new ball in the morning. It’s going to be massive, but we have to be there from ball one, « said Overton, who has four wickets in the game.

» Hopefully we’ll get a few early and keep going, but if they start really well we will of course have one real game. «

Rohit Sharma, who scored a solid 59 at the top of the leaderboard to set the tone for India’s setback, believed India was out to correct some of the earlier mistakes they all made Adversity contradicted.

« We made some stupid mistakes in the first innings, but it’s all about how quickly you learn from your mistakes, » he said.

“We did badly in the first innings. They threw pretty good balls, but it was definitely not a 78 (all out) pitch. As a batting unit, we accepted that we did badly and corrected our mistakes in the second innings, which is why we are now in this position. «
