The Penguins are expected to face the St. Louis Blues at the PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday in their home game Goalkeeper Casey DeSmith lining up.

This is the first time DeSmith has entered back-to-back competitions this season. In the 8: 5 home win on Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, he made 22 saves with 27 shots.

In seven games this season DeSmith has a 3-3-1 record, 3.32 goals against average. 894 savings percentage and a shutout.

After top goalkeeper Tristan Jarry was removed from the NHL’s list of Covid-19 protocols, he is expected to serve as a backup for DeSmith. Such a stake could potentially allow Jarry to start in Thursday’s street game against rivals Philadelphia Flyers.

• Sullivan said strikers Teddy Blueger and Kasperi Kapanen will each be available for Wednesday’s game after being recently removed from the Covid-19 protocol list. Both players missed Sunday’s game.

Blueger has participated in 30 games this season and has 12 points (seven goals, five assists) with an average average ice time of 16:22 per competition.

In 30 games this season, Kapanen has scored 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) and an average of 16:54 ice time per competition.

• Striker Jeff Carter was removed from the list of Covid-19 protocols on Wednesday morning and took part in Wednesday morning skate. Sullivan said Carter wouldn’t play the Blues.

• After Carter has been removed, the only penguin player in the log for Covid-19 rookie striker is Drew O’Connor.

• Striker Evgeni Malkin took part in the morning run but will be sidelined after surgery on his right knee in the off-season. He was named long-term casualty reserve throughout the season.

• Participants in the optional morning skating included strikers Zach Aston-Reese, Kasper Bjorkqvist, Blueger, Brian Boyle, Carter, Kapanen, Sam Lafferty, Malkin, Dominik Simon and Radim Zohorna; Defense attorneys Mark Friedman, Mike Matheson, Juuso Riikola, Chad Ruhwedel, and Marcus Pettersson; DeSmith and Jarry.

• The Penguins are expected to bring Blueger, Kapanen and Jarry back to their active squads and to add some of their reserve players – such as strikers Bjorkqvist, Zohorna and goalkeeper Louis Domingue – to the taxi roster.

• Goalkeeper Jordan Binnington is expected to start for the Blues. In 19 games this season, Binnington has a 10-6-3 record, 2.89 goals against average, a saving percentage of 0.910 and a shutout.

• The Blues « recalled » a coach from their American Hockey League (AHL) subsidiary for the game. Springfield Thunderbirds head coach Drew Bannister has been called up to the NHL club. He will help replace assistant coaches Mike Van Ryn, who has been included in Covid-19 protocols, and Steve Ott, who is struggling with a back injury.
