CM – Penn State team examines battery requirements for eVTOL applications versus electric vehicles

The unique operating profiles and requirements of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) – also known as flying cars – pose enormous challenges for batteries. In an article in Joule magazine, a team from Penn State University analyzed the primary performance metrics required for eVTOL batteries versus electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

In addition, eVTOL batteries should continue to function after a security incident until they land safely.

Specifically, we highlight the importance of fast charging, which is essential to downsizing aircraft and batteries to reduce costs while achieving high vehicle usage rates to maximize revenue. We emphasize that every fast charging technology should fulfill three metrics at the same time: charging time shorter than the passenger change (5–10 minutes), charged energy for the next trip and a long service life.

We are experimentally demonstrating two energy-dense Li-ion battery designs that can charge enough energy for 80 km eVTOL trips in 5–10 minutes and withstand over 2,000 rapid charging cycles. We hope these first designs will fuel an exciting evolution of eVTOL batteries.
