KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called on experts in the field of brain research to support the government in formulating a dementia policy with valuable suggestions. He called when he announced a « dementia-friendly Kochi » at a virtual event on Saturday at the science seminar complex in Cusat. Dementia clinics, nursing homes and dementia-friendly neighborhood programs were inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

The function was organized by the Cusat Neuroscience Center in cooperation with the district administration and the company. The state pays special attention to care for the elderly, which is an important development indicator in every region, as the prospects for older people are an important concern. It was decided to set up age-appropriate wards at the major hospitals in all districts.

The CM also called for the support of neuroscience experts from the Cusat Center for Neuroscience in formulating specific guidelines, plans and training programs for the care of the elderly with dementia. He said studies have shown that lifestyle diseases are a leading cause of dementia, adding that Kerala still needs to make progress in combating lifestyle diseases. The Minister for Industry, Law and Coir, P. Rajeeve, chaired the meeting. Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden has published the dementia-friendly Kochi app.

Kochi is becoming dementia friendly by offering free psychological counseling to help people suffering from the disease, said Mayor M Anil Kumar.
