Congratulations to @OlafScholz on being elected Chancellor. I look forward to working closely together to further strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Germany.

Olaf Scholz was appointed the new Federal Chancellor on Wednesday, ending Angela Merkel’s 16-year term in office.

As expected, Scholz, the chairman of the SPD, won the secret vote in parliament, a climax of months of negotiations after the SPD’s narrow victory in the federal election in September, reported CNN.

According to CNN, after the ceremony, Scholz was with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who officially appointed him the new Federal Chancellor. He will be sworn in in parliament on Wednesday. At the end of the 2000s, Scholz was Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in Merkel’s first coalition government. In 2011 he was elected mayor of Hamburg, a position he held – with great support – until 2018.

Since then he has been Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance in Merkel’s grand coalition, a powerful position in German federal politics.

“Scholz seems to owe his success [in the election] in part to the fact that he pretends to be [Merkel’s] worthy heir during the election campaign, calm and humble – and with his hands folded into a Merkel-style diamond in a picture that went viral, ”CNN quoted Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank. Schmieding wrote that in an analyst note on Wednesday.

« Such an imitation is probably the best compliment he could have paid her. Despite some ups and downs during her long term in office, Merkel, the country’s most popular politician, is leaving office with 69 percent approval, » added Schmieding.
