WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus speaks during the opening of the World Health Organization Academy in Lyon, central France, on Monday, September 27, 2021. (AP)

The Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stumbled upon his words and first mispronounced the word « children » with « kil / cil ». Then he corrected himself and pronounced the word « children ». This led some people to claim he said « kill children ».

WHO supports the use of vaccines for children and says there is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine killed children .

A December 22nd Twitter post alleged that the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was caught on camera with alarming news about the COVID-19 vaccine and children.

The post used a video clip of Tedros speaking at a WHO press conference on December 20:  » So when using (a COVID-19 booster) it is better to focus on those groups at risk of serious illness and death. instead, as we see, some countries use cil children to brush up on what is wrong. «

The Post claims that Tedros really said, » The vaccines are used to kill children. « The video was made Retweeted over 1,700 times, with many believing the general manager had just uncovered a plot to kill children.

The post was flagged on its news feed as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat hoaxes and misinformation (Read More via our partnership with Facebook.) Step on the brakes – this is where a public figure stumbles upon his words instead of saying the vaccines are used to kill children. The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts of the World Health Organization announced that the Pfizer / BionTech vaccine is suitable for people 12 years and older, and that the vaccine is safe for most people 18 and older.

Additionally, the W HO concludes that the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine based on studies outweigh the risks for all ages. « What happened on Monday at the WHO press conference during its delivery of the word » children  » is that it got stuck on the first syllable « chil » and it sounded like « cil / kil », « the World Health Organization said in a statement to PolitiFact. « He then immediately pronounced the same syllable correctly, which came out audibly as » cil-children « . Any other interpretation of that is 100% wrong. »

The WHO strongly supports the use of vaccines to protect people from COVID -19, said the spokesman. A video and transcript of the press conference are available on the WHO website. The World Health Organization has repeatedly said that people at higher risk of COVID-19 should get the vaccine before children who, according to the WHO, are prone to milder illness.

PolitiFact has reviewed numerous claims that COVID-19 vaccines are killing children to have. Many claims have cited the federal database of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System as a source to prove that vaccines have killed hundreds of children. But VAERS reports are not checked for accuracy prior to publication. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration continually warn that reports are often « missing details and sometimes contain information that contains errors ». This makes VAERS a breeding ground for misinformation. « Nationally comprehensive vaccine safety surveillance systems, administered by both the FDA and CDC, have found no evidence that COVID-19 vaccination causes death in children or contributes to it, « said a CDC spokesman PolitiFact in another fact check.

The German media broadcaster Deutsche Welle has checked several claims from around the world regarding children and the COVID-19 vaccine and found that » it there is no evidence that a COVID-19 vaccine is dangerous for young children « . UK-based company Full Fact also reported that these types of claims have no evidence to back them up.

In a Twitter post, World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that the COVID-19 vaccines are used to kill children.

The clip and the post misinterpret this quote. WHO confirmed that Tedros stumbled upon the word « children » before immediately correcting himself and pronouncing the word correctly. This is supported by public statements from Tedros and the WHO.

There is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine harmed or killed children. Both WHO and CDC state the vaccine has been shown to be safe to protect people from COVID-19, and fact-checking reports from around the world say claims like this have no evidence to support them / p> World Health Organization, WHO Director General’s opening speech at media briefing for Geneva journalists, December 20, 2021
