NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTIONS People who sleep six hours or less a night by the age of 50 or 60 are at greater risk of dementia.

Researchers say their results fail to determine cause and effect, but suggest that there is a correlation between the duration of sleep and the risk of dementia.

There was also a 30% increased risk of dementia in patients with consistently short sleep patterns from middle to older age (from 50 to 70 years of age), regardless of cardiometabolic or mental health problems ( known risk factors for dementia).

The study shows that sleep can be important for mid-life brain health, and future research may determine whether improving sleep habits can help prevent dementia.

A common symptom is sleep changes, but researchers say there is increasing evidence that sleep patterns may have changed before the onset of d he dementia can contribute to the disease.
