Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized in an interview with CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour on Monday evening (Athens time) that the Greek government will not resort to any further national lockdown.
Mitsotakis insisted that vaccination is the only way to keep both the economy and society open and active during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The mandatory vaccination of people over the age of 60 and the imposition of a monthly fine of 100 euros, which came into force on January 16, was « a last resort, » he said. « I’m a liberal politician and I generally don’t like the idea of mandates, but I believe we made the right decision as soon as the Omicron variant – which we don’t know much about – emerged, » said Mitsotakis.
Commenting on Pope Francis’ visit to Greece and his visit to the Kara Tepe refugee facility on Lesbos, the Greek Prime Minister stated that “there was not enough solidarity at EU level regarding the sharing of the burden of [migration]” . In the EU, he said, « there are countries that do not see migration as their problem. »
