Last month, Princess Charlene of Monaco entered a treatment facility that, according to her husband, Prince Albert, was suffering from « both emotional and physical exhaustion ». There has been little news about the princess’s condition since then, but her father Michael Wittstock recently spoke out to the South African press.

« Given the way she used to train, » he said, referring to the fact that the princess is a former Olympic swimmer, « I know she’s tough and can get through this and much stronger will come out.  »

The news that Charlene was stepping down from her royal duties in order to seek treatment was only the latest in a series of health problems that plagued the princess for much of the year. In May she flew to her home country South Africa to do some of her wildlife conservation work. While the trip was originally planned as a short stopover, Charlene eventually spent six months away from her family as she could no longer fly to Monaco due to an ear, nose and throat infection. For most of the time, Charlene was separated from her husband and their six-year-old twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, despite having a visit from them in August in South Africa.

It wasn’t until early November that Charlene was finally able to return to Monaco, but it seems things changed shortly afterwards when Prince Albert told People that things « went pretty well for the first few hours and then it turned out nice « . obviously she was not doing well. She was clearly exhausted, both physically and mentally. She was overwhelmed and could not do justice to official duties, life in general or even family life. «
