MONZA: Oscar Piastri took a dominant first win in the main race at the Monza Circuit, beating Guanyu Zhou to extend his lead in the championship. The duo turned into a late fight with the fast Dan Ticktum on fresh, soft tires when the race ended under safety car conditions, Carlin finished third.
Piastri was unable to finish on the last lap at Silverstone to convert pole position and lost to Zhou when the lights went out but seemed to have learned from experience and to finish the first lap in the lead. Zhou jumped from third to second place and kept up the pressure throughout the race, but found no way past his title rival.
As the best-placed driver in the alternative strategy, Ticktum had a chance of victory from a safety five laps before the end Car. Eight overtaking maneuvers followed on the option tire before it was stopped by Bernd Maylander’s Mercedes after a collision between David Beckmann and Bent Viscaal.
The winners of sprint races 1 and 2, Theo Pourchaire and Jehan Daruvala, missed another podium and were content with the last two places in the top five.
Piastri now has a lead of 15 points on Zhou with three laps to go and is in first place with 149 points. Shwartzman is third with 113, ahead of Ticktum with 104 and Pourchaire with 94. In the teams’ title race, PREMA has 262 ahead of UNI-Virtuosi with 193 and Carlin with 185. Hitech is fourth with 162 and ART with 132 fifth.
The title fight will now continue in just under two weeks in Sochi, where Piastri and Zhou are trying to restart their fight.
