CM – Rain and wind hit the Santa Cruz region on Monday evening – power outages in mountain areas likely

While it isn’t expected to bring as much rain as the recent atmospheric river to hit the Bay Area and Central Coast, a Monday night storm could bring up to 2 inches of rain and gusts of wind to Santa Cruz County up to 45 mph.

« We’re introducing crews today in areas where most outage activity is expected, which typically includes the Santa Cruz Mountains, » wrote Pacific Gas & Electric spokeswoman Mayra Tostado , by email. « We have stored power poles, power lines, transformers and other electrical equipment to supply the affected areas with power as quickly as possible. »

The National Weather Service issued a wind warning for the Bay Area and Central Coast regions from 7:00 pm out. Monday to Tuesday 3 a.m. South winds between 20 and 50 km / h with gusts of up to 45 km / h are possible and could cause branches and power lines to fall and make driving difficult for cars with trailers or large vehicles.

🤷🌧️ 🤷‍♂️ Many of you might be wondering, « Where’s the rain? » Most precipitation falls between sunset tonight and sunrise Tuesday morning. Here is a plot of the time of precipitation associated with this system. pic.twitter.com/m7JPbtLrlE

« During the last atmospheric river storm on the Central Coast, we saw hundreds of failures due to trees or branches damaging electrical equipment, » Tostado wrote. « This remains a problem with this storm as well, as the increased conditions caused by the drought weakened the vegetation and could lead to more trees falling into our equipment and causing power outages. »

Fearing debris flows in areas dated CZU fire in 2020, the county urged more than 3,000 households to evacuate during a 24-hour window amid the previous atmospheric flow; there was no debris flow, but blackouts were common. PG&E reported that more than 10,000 households in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties were affected by the October 24th storm.

Most of the rainfall is expected between Monday night and Tuesday morning, with light rainfall until the end of Day on Tuesday. Once the rain stops on Tuesday evening, the temperatures are expected to warm up on Wednesday and through the end of the week with drier conditions.

– Charge cell phones and other electronic devices – Have extra batteries for flashlights and avoid them Avoid using candles because of the risk of fire-Secure or store patio furniture to avoid wind and rain damage-For those with landlines, PG&E recommends using a wired phone that does not use electricity-If you see a broken power line call 911 and don’t go nearby – Report power outages and get updates on your outage status by calling 800-PGE-5002 or visiting www.pge.com / outages.
