Pitcher Noah Syndergaard and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed on a $ 21 million one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Syndergaard, 29, has spent the past seven seasons with the New York Mets, after being traded by the Toronto Blue Jays prior to his first game with the Majors. On his debut in 2015, he finished fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year poll after posting a 3.24 ERA with 166 strikeouts over 24 starts and 150 innings. His sophomore year was even more impressive: over 30 starts and 183.2 innings, he had a 2.60 ERA with 218 strikeouts.
Syndergaard was to be part of the Mets of the future dynamite rotation, which in 2015 included Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey but he just couldn’t get well. In 2017, he missed over four months with a torn hamstring in his nodding arm. He missed a month in 2018 with a finger injury, later several weeks after contracting hand, foot and mouth disease.
He stayed sane through 2019, pitching nearly 200 innings but ending with disappointing ones 4.28 ERA. Then Syndergaard missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery on Tommy John and pitched just two innings towards the end of 2021 after missing the entire year with a right elbow infection. The Mets made him a qualifying offer that he didn’t officially decline, but a deal with the Angels is a pretty good sign he won’t say yes.
Now that he’s exempt from the Mets, is Syndergaard ready for a fresh start, and that’s what he’ll get with the Angels. A year-long contract gives him the chance to re-establish himself after essentially missing out on two full seasons, and shows that he can still be effective even if he’s no longer the same pitcher as 2015 and 2016.
The Angels urgently need to improve their rotation around Shohei Ohtani. 17 different pitchers started at least one game for the Angles in 2021 and 11 pitchers started at least five games. Although Ohtani struggled with injuries throughout the season, he was the only Angels starter to line up more than 100 innings.
Syndergaard’s signing comes with some risk as he’s been injured for either of the past four years or was mediocre through and through. But unless they find a way to clone Ohtani four times, that’s exactly the risk the angels should take in hoping to improve.
