While center Andre Drummond has been viewed by many as a temporary option for the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA insider says the team is keen to re-sign him during the off-season.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin appeared on The Lowe Post podcast, hinting that the Lakers are planning to make an offer to keep Drummond in LA.
« They went out of their way to make him the ceremonial starter is, « Drummond’s McMenamin said in the Lowe Post. “And obviously he’s getting more than just ceremonial minutes. That seems to matter to Drummond, which makes it important to the Lakers front office because they’ve signaled to anyone who listens that this isn’t just a half-season buyout market rent. Andre Drummond is part of the future that drives this franchise. ”
The Lakers signed Drummond after the Cleveland Cavaliers bought the rest of his deal, which was due to expire at the end of this season.
Drummond earned just over $ 27 million while playing for the Cavaliers, and a report showed that he is looking for a maximum deal if he becomes a free agent.
That is why Drummond became perceived as a rental company for the Lakers, although this new report appears to show a change in Lakers philosophy.
Drummond will turn 28 in August and has averaged one double-double over the course of his career. Right now, Drummond is not a financial problem for the Lakers, but a massive new deal could be difficult for the Lakers to fit below the salary cap.
