CM – Ridley Scott says that FX’s « Alien » television series « will never be as good » as the 1979 original

"Fargo" showrunner Noah Hawley takes over the "Alien" franchise for a new limited FX series.

Ridley Scott is facing one of the biggest fall movie seasons of his career thanks to the release of two big new films: « The Last Duel » and « House of Gucci ». The former has already received strong reviews from the Venice Film Festival, while the latter shows the return of Lady Gaga as an actor after her Oscar-nominated breakthrough in « A Star Is Born. » But even with two big films on the way, interviewers can’t help but ask Scott about the past. Specifically, the « Alien » franchise.

During a recent interview with The Independent, Scott expressed a little disbelief at receiving his « Alien » franchise revival. The filmmaker reissued the franchise with “Prometheus” from 2012 and continued with “Alien: Covenant” from 2017, but the disappointing box office returns for the latter have more or less put the franchise on an indefinite hiatus.

As reported by The Independent, « [Scott is] louder about the ‘Alien’ franchise, which he revived with the 2012 origin story ‘Prometheus’ – ‘and the studio … said,’ You see, it wasn’t going too well ! ‘Really? « He came back in 2017 with » Alien: Covenant, «  » Put the aliens back in there, « and the movie made a lot less: $ 240 million worldwide.’ If you have a wonderful beast, it wears out and you actually have to think about it again. ‘“

While no « Alien » films are in official development, cable network FX is currently developing a television series based on the property with « Fargo » and « Legion » showrunner Noah Hawley at the helm. Hawley has already stated that the television series “Alien” is not about Sigourney Weavers Ripley and is set on Earth.

The Independent adds, “Wherever [the series goes], whatever they do , ‘It will never be as good as the first one,’ [Scott] grins. ‘I say so.’ ”

Will Scott ever bring the“ Alien ”franchise back to the big screen? In a 2020 interview with Forbes, the director teased that a new “Alien” movie was in the works but probably wouldn’t revisit the worlds set up by “Prometheus” and “Covenant”.

“This is in Editing. We took a path to reinvent the wheel with ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Covenant’, ”Scott said at the time. “Whether we will come back to it directly is questionable, because ‘Prometheus’ woke it up very well. But, you know, you ask basic questions like: “Is the alien itself, the facehugger, the chestburster all fed up? Do you have to rethink the whole damn thing and just use the word franchise? ‘That’s always the basic question. »
