CINCINNATI (AP) – Tony Santillan allowed a run in six innings to score his first Major League win, and Nick Castellanos scored a homer with two runs, bringing the Cincinnati Reds to a 5 on Thursday night: 3 win over the Atlanta Braves. ,

Santillan (1-1) gave up three hits, hit eight and went three in his third big league start. He also doubled in the third inning for his first career hit.

« Not only was Tony very happy with the win, he pitched very well, » said Reds manager David Bell. “He got his first hit. It was a big night for him. ”

The Major League Baseball crackdown on the use of sticky substances continued Thursday, with referees randomly checking the pitchers. Braves manager Brian Snitker deflected any suspicion with left-handed Tyler Matzek, who threw 21 throws and ran three in two-thirds of an inning to relieve starter Jesse Chavez (0-1).

Matzek averaged 2,575 rpm on his slider, 2,090 on his fastball and 2,477 on his curve – all below his season averages of 2,997, 2,487 and 3,303. It was his second outing since the new rules were introduced.

The Braves, who score almost half of their runs on home runs, took a 1-0 lead in their first game against Freddie Freeman’s 17th homer. But that was the only run Atlanta could manage against Santillan.

« At least this is the top of the range for me to win with my name, » said Santillan. “I don’t show a lot of emotion on the pitch. It was all in a good mood after I hit the double. ”

Brad Brach, the fourth pitcher for the Reds of the evening, scored three outs on his first save of the season.

It was a bullpen day for the Braves, who brought 37-year-old Chavez (0-1) from Triple-A Gwinnett to his 482nd game in the Major League and his first start since 2019. He left two runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss. « It wasn’t easy to put things together, » said Snitker. « We navigated the whole thing well and kept ourselves in the game. »

The Reds clung to a 2-1 lead when Castellanos delivered the big blow, his double blow against Luke Jackson in the seventh. Castellanos drove in four races.

« Those are the points where I have to improve, » said Castellanos. “I had to get better with runners on the base.”

The Reds’ struggling bullpen suffered another hit Thursday when right-handed Lucas Sims was added to the 10-day injury list with a sprained right elbow. Sims is 4-1 with a 5.02 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings. He is expected to be absent for up to four weeks.

« There was one night in San Diego (last week) where he felt like he had slept badly on his elbow, then he recovered, » said Bell.

To make room for Chavez, the Braves elected right-handed Kyle Wright and Ty Tice to triple-A Gwinnett and added left-handed Tucker Davidson and catcher Alex Jackson to the 60-day injured list. Right-handed Tanner Roark was also selected by Triple-A.

Braves: OF Ronald Acuna Jr. was off the line-up with a stiff back for the second day in a row. « It still hurts, » said Snitker. “You worked on him today. Hopefully he’ll be back tomorrow. It’s an everyday thing. « Acuna was scratched from his start on Wednesday.

Reds: RHP Sonny Gray was scratched from his rehab start on Thursday at Triple-A Louisville after waking up Wednesday morning with back pain. Gray , who has been on the 10-day list of injuries since June 9 with a groin injury on his right side, has been postponed to today.

Right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez (3-1, 3.86 ERA) makes his sixth appearance in the major League, after becoming the 19th pitcher in Reds franchise history with at least three wins in its first four starts since Tom Shearn in 2007. The Braves counter with left-handed Drew Smyly (0-1, 4.70 ERA) who will make his 13th start.
