As in Indianapolis, the individual car qualifying at the Bathurst 1000 has become a great tradition. The Mount Panorama Circuit is one of the best and most unique in the world, and there is no better place to see it than to get a pole on the line at the absolute limit with just one driver, one car, and one goal to get your focus on to. It is the conditions that produced Greg Murphy’s « Lap of the Gods » and Scott McLaughlin’s very first lap in a supercar at Bathurst in 2:03. This morning the series held their traditional top ten shootout session and that record fell again.
It was Chaz Mostert, winner of a pass in the final lap in the unforgettable 2014 race, Holden and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Made honor. Tickford Racing and Ford’s Cameron Waters had already beaten McLaughlin’s 2017 time with a lap of 2: 03.686, but Mostert had been quick in practice and was a clear contender for pole in the session. At the end of Sector 1, it was purple, on the way to Mount Panorama at a record pace. In Sector 2 it was green, enough to stay ahead. Then purple again through Sector 3.
Mostert had to stay at the absolute limit for a full 3.8 mile lap to take pole, so he did it. It was enough to achieve 2: 03.373, the new lap record for a supercar in Mount Panorama and 3/10 ahead of Waters and Anton De Pasquale. Since only these three broke the 2:04 mark, Mostert was an astonishing 7/10 ahead of fourth-placed Tim Slade. The second best Holden in the entire field, Shane van Gisbergen in fifth, was a full second behind Mostert’s best time.
