Champion Sydney Roosters forward Boyd Cordner is set to retire with two years of contract remaining and kicked out of the game at just 29 due to recurrent concussions.
The kangaroos and NSW blues skipper had planned a round 14 comeback this year, which has now been abandoned.
The Roosters second rower made the decision on medical advice after recently undergoing tests to get clearance to return to the game.
His last appearance was for NSW in Adelaide at the State of Origin last November when he was felled while trying to take on Queensland striker Felise Kaufusi.
Cordner played 183 games for the Roosters, beginning in 2011. He represented NSW 16 times and 20 times for Australia, replacing Cameron Smith as captain of the Kangaroos.
His resignation will be announced at a press conference on Monday morning at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Cordner conducted his last interview with The Daily Telegraph in early May, speaking of his plans to return to the NRL in round 14 after a six-month break from play.

The Roosters now have an additional $ 700,000 salary cap to cover his position.
He is the third star of the Sydney Roosters to be removed from the game this year and the second due to recurrent concussions. Co-captain Jake Friend was eliminated in the opening game of the season against Manly at the Sydney Cricket Ground and never recovered while champions winger Brett Morris suffered a serious knee injury.
« There’s nothing to suggest he can’t play football again, » Robinson said last month. « All tests were positive. »
The Roosters, more than any other club, have always taken an ultra-conservative approach to treating head injuries.
Cordner’s resignation comes at a time when the NRL has launched a crackdown on high tackles for the safety and wellbeing of players
The Roosters had a rough time with injuries after losing representative front rower Lindsay Collins and five-eighth-placed Luke Keary to injuries at the end of the season.
Cordner was never pressured to make a decision despite being one of the club’s highest paid players.
« Boyd’s health is everything that worries us, » Roosters boss Nick Politis recently told me. « Nothing else matters. He’s a great guy and a great player. »
Cordner is retiring as one of the greats of the Roosters after leading the team to two premierships.
