CM – « Strong Evidence » Covid Is Mostly Airborne: Lancet

A new review in the medical journal Lancet found « consistent, strong evidence » that the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is largely airborne.

According to six experts from the UK, the US and Canada, including Jose-Luis Jimenez, a chemist at the Cooperative Institute for Research, are leaving public health measures that do not treat the virus as predominantly airborne that leave people unprotected and enabled the spread of the virus in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) and the University of Colorado Boulder.

« The evidence of airborne transmission is overwhelming and there is almost no evidence of large droplet transmission, » Jimenez said. « It is imperative that the World Health Organization and other public health agencies update their description of transmission to reflect the science so that the mitigation focus is on reducing airborne transmission. »

The team of experts, led by Trish Greenhalgh of Oxford University reviewed published research and identified 10 lines of evidence to prove flight route dominance.

Top of their list: super-spreader events like the Skagit Choir eruption, which saw 53 people break out of one single infected case were infected. Studies have confirmed that these events cannot be adequately explained by close contact or touching common surfaces or objects.

In addition, the transmission rates of SARS-CoV-2 indoors are much higher than outdoors, and transmission is through greatly reduced indoor ventilation.

The team highlighted the research and estimated that silent (asymptomatic or presymptomatic) transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from people who don’t cough or sneeze accounts for at least 40 percent of all transmissions . This silent transmission is a key element in which COVID-19 has spread around the world and « supports a predominantly airborne mode of transmission, » the assessment said. The researchers also cited work demonstrating long-distance transmission of the virus between people in adjacent rooms in hotels. People who were never in each other’s presence.

In contrast, the team found little or no evidence that the virus spreads easily via large droplets that quickly fall through the air and contaminate surfaces. </ "We have been able to identify and interpret highly complex and specialized articles on the dynamics of fluid flows and the isolation of live viruses," said lead author Greenhalgh. "While some individual papers were rated as weak, the overall evidence base for airborne transmission is extensive and robust. There should be no further delay in implementing measures to protect against such transmission worldwide."

The new one Work has serious implications for public health actions aimed at mitigating the pandemic. First, « drip measures » such as hand washing and surface cleaning, while not unimportant, should be less emphasized than airborne measures that deal with inhaling airborne infectious particles.

When an infectious virus is primarily in the Airborne, someone can potentially be infected if they inhale aerosols that are produced when an infected person exhales, speaks, screams, sing, or sneezes. Airborne control measures include ventilation, air filtering, reducing overcrowding and the time people spend indoors, wearing masks indoors (even if they are not within 6 feet or 2 meters of others ), attention to mask quality and customization, and higher quality PPE for healthcare and other personnel working with potentially infectious individuals.

« It’s quite surprising that someone is still wondering if the transmission is in the Whether or not air is the predominant route of transmission for this virus, « said co-author Professor Kimberly Prather, an aerosol scientist at the University of California at San Diego. « Only by including aerosol inhalation both at close range and at great distance can we explain the many indoor outbreaks that have occurred around the world. Once we realize this virus is in the air, we know how we are fix it. There are many examples of places where it does.  » It was much better when you acknowledged that this virus was in the air from the start. The world must follow its example as soon as possible. «
