Supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tore down a police blockade in downtown Brasilia on Monday evening, the police announced the previous evening of massive demonstrations that are holding the country in suspense.
Bolsonaro is fighting against record-low polls and is trying to to mobilize his base, particularly during the protests in Brasilia and Sao Paulo.
The far-right leader plans to attend both rallies on Tuesday, Brazil’s Independence Day, to put pressure on the Supreme Court to investigate him and his closest circle Hundreds of people who arrived to take part in the protests on Tuesday « broke containment barriers » and entered the avenue leading to the National Congress and the Supreme Court (STF), according to federal district police.
In videos posted on social media and shared by local news outlets, a small caravan of cars was un d to see trucks entering the Ministry’s esplanade, cheered on by demonstrators waving Brazilian flags.
« We just marched in! » The police couldn’t contain the people! And tomorrow we will raid the STF, ”shouted a walking protester.
The marches have monopolized public debate in Brazil, including warnings, something similar to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of the former president To avoid Donald Trump.
The police said they were still there. In images from CNN Brazil, the situation appeared to be under control.
The district government organized an operation with 5,000 police officers to protect public buildings and prevent rioting.
Bolsonaro said in the past few days that the Tuesday’s rallies should be viewed as an « ultimatum » for the Supreme Court justices who have launched multiple investigations against him and his close circle, particularly over allegations of systematically disseminating fake government news.
Despite the allegation, the purpose of the protests is to defend « freedom, » many pro-Bolsonaro protesters who have organized on social media plan to chant slogans in support of attacks on democratic institutions.
