US telecommunications giant T-Mobile is investigating a possible data protection breach that may have affected 100 million users after hackers claimed to have sold the data for six bitcoins ($ 270,000) on the dark web.
The sellers told Motherboard that they had received data from over 100 million people from T-Mobile servers that included social security numbers, names, addresses and driver’s license information.
T-Mobile said in a statement on Sunday: » We are aware of the allegations made in an underground forum and have been actively investigating their validity. We currently have no additional information to disclose. «
In January of this year, T-Mobile allegedly suffered a security breach, which may have disclosed call records and phone numbers of some of its customers.
According to T-Mobile, the breach has no name, physical ad Earnings, email addresses, financial details, credit card information, social security numbers, tax numbers, passwords or PINs of the account holders.
First reported by Bleeping Computer, T-Mobile said the breach revealed customers’ proprietary network information (CPNI), including phone numbers and call records.
Previous violations at T-Mobile disclosed customer data in 2018, prepaid customer data in 2019, and customer and financial data last March, the report said.
T-Mobile said the new violation affected a « small number of customers (less than 0.2 percent). »
T-Mobile has around 100 million customers, which corresponds to around 200,000 people affected by this violation.
A violation in March 2020 disclosed the financial information, social security numbers and other account information of some T-Mobile customers.
