Mass evacuations of more than 14,000 residents are currently at high risk -Barangays of the cities of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas carried out after the Taal volcano spewed a kilometer-high phreatomagmatic cloud and was finally placed under alert level 3, which means that the magmatic intrusion at the main crater is monitored and that the activities can drive further eruptions.

Mark Timbal, spokesman for the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), said, the residents of the areas near the volcano in Agoncillo were evacuated around 5 p.m. On Thursday, July 1, the focus will be on residents of Barangays Banyaga and Bilibinwang.

Timbal said local Laurel City officials have also started moving residents of Barangays Gulod, Boso-Boso and Lakeshore Bugaan East.

« We are coordinating the situation closely with all relevant departments. Our officers in Cavite and Batangas have already called an emergency meeting with the uniformed evacuation services, « said Timbal.

» There is a contingency plan for this type of emergency that guides the actions of our disaster managers, « he added.

On Thursday morning, police in Batangas and Cavite were advised to coordinate with local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) to evacuate residents who are likely to be affected by the rumble of Taal volcano.

General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said concerned police departments and units should coordinate with local government units to determine if residents need help due to the ongoing unrest at the volcano.

In January 2020 Police increased their security status in some areas in Calabarzon, particularly Batangas, following the phreatic outbreak of the Taal volcano.
