CM – The Antarctic has the hottest temperature of all time at 18.3 degrees Celsius, confirms the UN

Antarctica recorded a record temperature of up to 18.3 degrees Celsius (64.9 degrees Fahrenheit) last February, as of the

leading climate scientist at the United Nations.

According to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the measurement was taken on February 6, 2020 at Argentina’s Esperanza station on the Antarctic Peninsula, The Independent reported.

« The review of this high temperature record is on important because it helps us to create a picture of the weather and climate at one of the last borders of the world, « said WMO General Secretary Petteri Taalas of the AFP news agency.

» The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the regions of the world that heat up the fastest – almost 3 ° C in the last 50 years. This new temperature record is therefore in line with the climate change that we are observing, « he added.

While the WMO accepted the record of 18.3 degrees Celsius, it rejected an even higher temperature value of 20.75 ° C ( 69.4 ° F) reported on February 9 last year by a Brazilian automated permafrost monitoring station on nearby Seymour Island off the peninsula that extends north towards South America.

The earlier verified The record for the Antarctic continent – the mainland and the surrounding islands – was 17.5 ° C (63.5 ° F), which was set on the 24th.

The record for the rest of the Antarctic region – anywhere south of the 60th Latitude – is 19.8 ° C (67.6 ° F) as recorded on January 30, 1982 on Signy Island.

Taalas went on to say that the rising temperatures were due to the climate change we are observing and said the WMO was working in partnership with the Antarctic treaty system eite to help preserve this pristine continent.
