An elite coach gave Mackay basketball coaches helpful exercises and tips on defending themselves before the national U20 basketball championships.

The Center of Excellence’s Australian trainer Adam Caporn, who is also the Boomers’ assistant trainer, ran a free clinic for all trainers in Mackay.

The Queensland U20 players completed those run by Caporn Exercise while coaches from local levels to competing state teams watched with interest.

Caporn said having the opportunity to give back to the community and help develop young basketball talent was a reward.

« I think we can identify all the moments when a player or coach went to school or trained in a clinic and kids get excited about basketball, » said Caporn.

« It feels good, I enjoy talking to other coaches and problem-solving situations, and hearing about some of the challenges they are facing. »

« We are performing well so we try To work at the top but without compromising the base, we are missing the most important part of the development. «

Positioning, protecting the rim and different priorities in defense were the focus of the clinic, using different strategies were discussed and shared.

« It’s always good to hear from the coaches of the Center of Excellence, what they are trying to teach the children and what standards it on Australian plane ahead, » said Jensen.

With the U20 championship in Mackay in 2021 and 2022, the coaches expect interest in competitive and elite basketball to increase with the national tournament in town.

Jensen said the tournament was under Allows 16-year-olds to experience the next level of basketball.

“The standard of this tournament is fantastic. A lot of these kids will play NBL, WNBL, go to college and play there, « said Jensen.

Caporn said this type of tournament is ideal for assessing local talent after a long hiatus with COVID-19.

« No doubt I think there are boomers and Opals and NBA and WNBA players running around, » Caporn said.

« It gives us good feedback seeing them in different settings with different peers, and it is very valuable to see what they are doing well and what they are not doing well. «

» The speed with which controversial decisions are made is the main skill that has deteriorated without the pressure of the Games, so we need to find ways to solve this problem and better replicate it in practice. «
