The studios are looking to revitalize blockbuster franchises like Batman to restart the industry in a potentially exciting year for moviegoers

Paul Whitington

Will it ever be « normal » again? After another year that started and ended with tightened restrictions and general disruption, only a fool would hope 2022 will be different. But in cinematic terms, the success of No Time to Die and other major releases proves that Covid hasn’t killed the public’s appetite for going to the cinema.

Add to that the fact that the studios sat in faint hope on major releases that cinemas are back to full capacity and have to release now, and you have what may be the most exciting year for movie lovers in a long time.

Netflix continues to expand its power and influence; Tom Cruise will attack the summer with two huge blockbusters; Marvel will continue to tease out its post-Avengers universe; Batman gets a restart courtesy of Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson; and Pixar will give Buzz Lightyear the spin-off intergalactic ham has longed for.

Joel Coen has spoken about how strange it felt to see a movie without his brother for the first time in nearly 40 years Ethan, but at least he had his wife to keep him company.

Frances McDormand plays a shrewd and experienced Lady Macbeth in Coen’s darkly captivating rendition of Shakespeare’s tragedy, with Denzel Washington as her bad-star husband. Macbeth has just defeated the armies of Ireland and Norway and seems to be about to put his feet up when the predictions of three witches and his wife’s grim ambition move him to overthrow the king. Brendan Gleeson plays the unfortunate monarch in a film that teases out new nuances in a familiar story.

In 1970, 10-year-old Kenneth Branagh left Belfast with his parents to find a new life – and a new accent – in England. But his affection for his hometown has remained and finds its full expression in this delightful, wistful coming-of-age saga.

The protagonist « Buddy » (Jude Hill) is a happy boy from a Protestant family who is hers Shares the street harmoniously with Catholics – until the riots break out. Jamie Dornan and Caitríona Balfe play his parents, who must have been the best-looking couple in Belfast, and Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench play the lovable grandparents in a film that was shot in gorgeous black and white and cannot be missed.

Netflix has been working on this biopic for a while, and the advance notice says Ana de Armas is sensational as Marilyn Monroe. Andrew Dominik’s film is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel Blonde and shows Monroe’s rise to fame in 1950s Hollywood and her complex personal life. Adrien Brody plays a character clearly based on the playwright Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale is well-cast as Joe DiMaggio, and the Kennedy brothers will also make an appearance. I’m looking forward to this one.

It’s a brave man who takes on a franchise that was so recently vacated by Christopher Nolan, whose Batman trilogy has set a benchmark that will be hard to beat. But Matt Reeves seems to know what he’s doing and has created an impressively gritty Gotham City as the backdrop for an adventure starring Robert Pattinson as the young and inexperienced Caped Crusader still learning the ropes as a serial killer named The Riddler a reign of terror. Paul Dano is The Riddler, Colin Farrell The Pinguin and Zoe Kravitz Catwoman.

A production that began to look cursed when Covid stopped production and JK Rowling got involved in a transgender franchise looked doomed when Johnny Depp was forced by personal circumstances to give up the role of Grindelwald. Step inside Mads Mikkelsen, a better actor than Depp who will undoubtedly do justice to the villainous wizard. Eddie Redmayne takes on the role of Newt Scamander and Jude Law is the young Albus Dumbledore in a film that will test Rowling’s marketability – the previous two Fantastic Beasts films grossed $ 1.5 billion.

Robert Eggers follows his acclaimed but divisive 2019 film The Lighthouse with an epic epic set in the Island of the 10th.

Alexander Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman, who were so good together in Big Little Lies, play Amleth and Queen Gudrun, and Willem Dafoe , Ethan Hawke and Bjork are among the cast in a drama filmed on the wild coasts of Antrim and Inishowen and it sounds good and really crazy.

Daniel Craig revealed in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, a charming parody Agatha Christie -Mystery and one of the films of 2019, an unexpected gift for the comedy. co-stars Dave Bautista, Edward Norton and Janelle Monae. Netflix pays the bill and also supports a third Knives-Out movie.

As one of the pandemic’s greatest victims, this much-touted sequel to the 1980s action romp is being shown a full three years after its original release date. Tom Cruise, without whom none of this would have been possible, takes on his role as Captain Pete Mitchell, now a crafty US Navy instructor who leads Bradley (Miles Teller) – the son of his old friend Goose Bradshaw – to his dream of becoming a test pilot . The original was deeply silly, but hard to resist: Will this one be that successful?

In this action thriller directed by the Russo brothers and starring Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry, a veteran CIA agent who is looking for a Treason is forced to flee, shades of Jason Bourne. Chris Evans plays Lloyd Hansen, the corrupt colleague who wants to kill Gentry, and Ana de Armas, who looks like she’s got a big 2022, co-stars. Netflix supports the production. At $ 200 million, it will be his most expensive film to date.

At the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, an auction of genetically enhanced dinosaurs ended in chaos, and many of the animals took refuge in the California wilderness. So expect all sorts of carnage in this sequel as Owen (Chris Pratt) and Clare (Bryce Dallas Howard) try to save the creatures with the help of franchise heavyweights like Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum. One of the tentpole films in a potentially busy summer.

Buzz Lightyear appears in this Pixar prequel from Woody’s Shadow that tells us how the terrific Space Ranger fell to earth. Out comes Tim Allen, vocal Trump supporter and the voice of Buzz in all four Toy Story films, and in comes Chris Evans to present us with a younger and possibly even more deluded Lightyear, imaginary his intergalactic battle with Kaiser Zurg and others Enemies continues.

« Before Elvis, » John Lennon once said, « there was nothing. » The Tupelo man’s influence on popular music is unprecedented, which makes it all the stranger that he never got a decent biopic . Up the stairs Baz Luhrmann, never known for his understatement and perhaps the right man to make a film about a great singer who eventually stumbled upon a Las Vegas stage in a cape and high heels. Austin Butler is well-cast as Elvis, Tom Hanks is Colonel Parker, the villain of the play, and Olivia DeJonge is Priscilla.

My favorite Marvel movie and one of the funniest films of the past five years, Thor: Ragnarok, is going to be hard to follow, but Love and Thunder has the potential to live up to its inspired silliness. Taika Waititi again directs and co-writes, and Chris Hemsworth returns as a boastful Asgardian faced a dilemma when old squeeze Jane Foster (Natalie Porter) develops superpowers while on cancer treatment. Christian Bale plays the villain, and the Guardians of the Galaxy will also appear.

What we know about Jordan Peele’s next film is next to nothing. It’s kind of a horror movie with Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun and Keke Palmer, but if it’s nothing special, I’ll eat my hat. Peele is the man who brought us the brilliant racing satire Get Out and the dystopian underclass thriller Us. His best work combines the tropes of horror of the 1950s with sharp contemporary themes.

Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart was so successful and well done that his financial failure remains astounding. Let’s hope she has better luck with Don’t Worry Darling, written by Booksmart contributor Katie Silberman and set in the 1950s suburbs where the unhappy housewife Kate (the reliably brilliant Florence Pugh) discovers her cunning husband hides a bad secret. Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Wilde themselves make a dazzling good-looking cast.

It’s a big year for the cruiser who was caught and blinded on the set of this action sequel last summer – but as a producer, star and Part-Backer, in all fairness, he could have had quite a lot on his plate. In the end it was done, and MI7 is sure to pose another existential threat to Ethan Hunt and his long-suffering staff, albeit possibly not as daunting as the filming itself. Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames repeat long-established roles, and Hayley Atwell and Vanessa Kirby wear new clothes.

By far the best Spider-Man movie, Sony’s 2018 animation Into the Spider-Verse, won an Academy Award, rave reviews, and an enthusiastic teenage following. In this film, African American high school student Mile Morales was turned into Spider-Man only to find out he wasn’t the only one. In this sequel, he travels through time and space with Spider-Woman to face a dangerous new enemy. Shemeik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are repeating their dubbing roles for an animated film that has a lot going on.

Plans for a sequel to Marvel’s highly acclaimed 2018 film Black Panther had to end after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, the T’Challa, played the newly crowned Warrior King of Wakanda, to be seriously changed. In Panther 2, T’Challa’s former girlfriend Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) takes center stage as the technologically advanced African kingdom is once again plagued by enemies who intend to destroy it.

Thirteen years is a long time to go on waiting for a sequel, but James Cameron plans to bombard us with no fewer than four Avatar successors over the next six years, so be prepared. The 2009 was technically original, ahead of its time, and became the most successful film of all time until Avengers Assemble overtook it. To me, Avatar was a boring butt face, but millions would disagree, and it will be interesting to see how Cameron plans to advance his space epic.

From Whiplash to La La Land and First Man, he has Writer and director Damien Chazelle surprised and challenged the audience at every turn. Fascinatingly, his next film is set during Hollywood’s silent movie era, when ruthless studio bosses ruled a rapidly growing entertainment empire. Margot Robbie is Clara Bow, Brad Pitt plays a character based on the silent star John Gilbert, and Katherine Waterston and Samara Weaving co-stars. Hollywood has made surprisingly few good films about itself, but this could be one of them.
