A Northern Rivers Council is expected to write to the state government calling for the shark management strategy to continue.
Funding for the program, which was run for five years by the Department of Primary Industries and extended for a further twelve months, ends on June 30th.
At this week’s meeting, city councils will discuss the results of the program on the beaches of Evans Head.
As part of the strategy, drones, SMART drumlines, shark tagging and shark listening stations were used in the region.
A shark alert was funded by the council before the strategy started and it will continue to be used, with funds coming from the council’s budget.
The council’s Mid-Richmond coordinator, Latoya Cooper, wrote in her report to the council that the shark management program had been beneficial.
« The initiative has helped improve safety for beach users at Evans Head, particularly during the holiday months, and has provided the DPIE Shark Management Team with key data to implement appropriate mitigation measures, » she wrote.
« It is recommended that the Council seek additional funding from the New South Wales Government to ensure that this important program continues.
« Drones deployed at Airforce Beach in Evans Head during patrol hours between 9 am and 4 pm include both the NSW school holidays and QLD school holidays.
« Part of the NSW government’s funding for the Shark Mitigation Program was used to purchase drones for the Evans Head Surf Life Saving Club for future use.
« Evans Head’s involvement in shark control efforts by the NSW Primary Industries Department and Shark Management Team has been well received and appreciated by the community and council.
« Given the observation of 254 sharks from the program across the coast in 2019/2020, it is recommended that the Council work to continue funding this program and provide feedback to other government agencies on preferred actions for future sharks management at Evans Head. »
It is recommended that the council write to the DPI’s Shark Management Team to provide feedback on shark containment measures and to request ongoing funding for the program.
