CM – The dispute over the Catalan language is boiling over after the court ruling

A ruling in favor of a Catalan family who had urged that 25% of their son's schooling be in Spanish, the Supreme Court had to debate

Following a ruling in favor of a Catalan family who had urged that 25% of their son’s education be in Spanish, the Supreme Court had to consider measures to protect the boy and his parents from the region’s nationalists. The dispute over the Catalan language has resulted in the family falling victim to harassment and abuse by the group who view their opinion on the issue as an attack on the dialect and culture of the area.

There was reportedly one Whatsapp group dedicated to discussing the family and whether or not to make it known to the general public. Tweets were presented to the courts suggesting stoning their home and making sure the little boy was shunned at school. A tweet said, “The other children should leave their class if the class is in Spanish. If we don’t react, they kill our language. ”

The Catalan Supreme Court sent instructions to Regional Education Minister Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray and the boy’s headmaster to take steps to protect the boy’s identity. Gonzàlez-Cambray condemned « any kind of threat or violence » but called the court’s decision to hold 25% of the classes in Spanish « an intolerable attack », adding: « The Catalan school model is a success model that guarantees » us more social Cohesion, equal opportunities and equal opportunities. ”

The chairman of the Socialist Party of Catalonia has criticized the attacks on the family and reiterated that schools must follow the decision of the courts. “It’s not against Catalan; It’s about compliance with judgments and the [regional education system] still guarantees Catalan as an educational center in Catalonia, ”said Illa on Thursday December 9th.

The right-wing parties in Spain jumped on the Catalan language dispute and claim this shows that there is anti-Spanish discrimination in the region. The chairman of the PP, Pablo Casado, said: « Today we are suffering a terrible case of linguistic segregation in Spain, in which a five-year-old boy is involved. » and has called for a demonstration in front of the regional parliament on the evening of December 14th. It said it would no longer allow « twisted separatism to continue attacking the little boy and his family from Canet with total impunity. » To appease parliament so that their budget can be passed next year. One of those efforts was to propose that streaming platforms like Netflix have to transmit at least 6% of their content in Spain’s co-official languages: Catalan, Basque or Galician.
