CM – The IU reportedly hires Wilt as a defense coordinator after Warren joined the UNC

It took little time for Indiana football coach Tom Allen to find a new defensive coordinator.

Two days after Charlton Warren left the program for a similar position in North Carolina, the Hoosiers are expected to hire Minnesota assistant coach Chad Wilt to replace him, according to multiple media outlets.

Wilt has the final two Spent seasons as defensive line coach for the Gophers. The Gophers finished second in the Big Ten last season in terms of points allowed and yards allowed per game.

It will be Wilt’s job to reverse a defense that made a big one in Warren’s year as defensive coordinator Step backwards.

After Indiana finished fourth in the Big Ten in terms of permissible points and fifth in overall defense in the season shortened by COVID with eight games in 2020, Indiana fell to last place in the permissible Points and back to 10th in overall defense.

And after the Hoosiers took second place in the league in terms of bag and turnover in 2020, the Hoosiers were last in the league in both categories this season.

North Carolina announced the hiring of Warren as Co-Defensive Co-ordinator and Defensive Backs Coach under Mack Brown.

It will be a homecoming for Warren, who was on the Tar Heels team in 2015 and 2016.

« My family and I couldn’t be more excited to be returning to Chapel Hill, » Warren said in a UNC press release. « I’ve obviously followed the tar heels since leaving and you can see that the program is on the cusp of something special. They have been very well recruited and have a list of talented players that I am very much looking forward to working with.

« I want to thank Coach Brown and the administration for giving me this opportunity, and I can’t wait to work with the North Carolina staff. »

Allen now has his two coordinators out replaced a dismal 2021 season that started with the Hoosiers at # 12 in the nation and ended 2-10 overall and 0-9 in the Big Ten.

Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan was sacked immediately after the season and the former Massachusetts head coach Walt Bell has been hired to lead the offensive.
