CM – The last Indian soldier who helped the Dalai Lama escape has died

The last surviving member of a small troop of soldiers who accompanied the Dalai Lama on his escape from Tibet in 1959 died at the age of 85, his former regiment announced today.

The Tibetan spiritual leader came to India as a young monk after a 13-day hike through the Himalayas, disguised as a soldier, to avoid being discovered by Chinese troops.

Naren Chandra Das, who died on Monday in his residence in Assam, was then 22 years old and had just completed his training with the Assam Rifles, the oldest paramilitary force in the Indian army.

Together with six others Soldiers he escorted the monk to Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh on March 31, 1959.

That described in an interview with local media last year how the soldiers had walked through the mountainous region while the Dalai Lama was on horseback.

The retired soldier remembered how his group was not allowed to speak to the young monk when they were escorting him to safety.

The 86-year-old Dalai Lama, who contests Tibet’s independence, has lived in exile in India since then.

The two had an emotional reunion in 2017 when they met for the first time in almost 60 years.

« When I see your face, I now realize that I must be very old too, « said the Tibetan spiritual leader Das.

A year later, Das was invited to Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama had set up a Tibetan government-in-exile with permission from Delhi.
