If you want a naturally aspirated, six-cylinder engine and a racing car-derived chassis without an over-the-top look, this is your 911.

The 2016 Porsche 911 R proved that there was a big market for a subtle-looking 911 with the best hardware from the GT3 and GT3 RS there. In 2017, for example, Porsche rolled out a touring package for the 911 GT3 that canceled the large wing and only came with a manual transmission. It was a hit, so the automaker is bringing it back with a big change for the 992-generation GT3.

Unlike before, the GT3 Touring comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard, with a six-speed manual transmission available as an option. This is important because at least for the 2022 model year, Porsche is unable to sell a manual GT3 in the important California market because the car does not meet a noise control that the automaker was expecting at the time. (This also applies to non-touring GT3.)

Otherwise the story is the same as before. The Touring is functionally identical to the standard GT3, only with a retractable rear spoiler instead of a large wing. You get the same 510bhp, naturally aspirated 4.0L six-cylinder engine, and while the damper settings are slightly different, the suspension – including the GT3’s unique double wishbone front – is also largely identical.

Inside there are a standard leather interior with fabric inserts for the seats, although more color options will be available than on the previous GT3 Touring. And apart from wing deletion, the exterior tweaks are pretty minimal.

As before, the Touring Package is a free option on the 2022 911 GT3, which means the car carries the same MSRP of $ 162,450 as its winged brother. Shipments of 992 GT3 Tourings begin early next year, and the car is sure to become a staple of cars and coffees in affluent areas and on Instagram feeds. (Or at least this reporter’s Instagram feed.)

If you’re in California, don’t be surprised to see a manual GT3 Touring wearing out-of-state signs. Porsche dealers in the state might not be able to sell you one, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy one.
