The father of a top tennis player caused such concern during a game on Monday that the referee was forced to call for help.
The Italian Open match between Camila Giorgi and Sara Sorribes Tormo was marred by abuse thrown at the referee by Giorgi’s father Sergio.
Sergio Giorgi, who is also Camila’s coach, repeatedly argued with the referee, who was so concerned that she glared for help, according to several reports. The video of the call shows Sergio staring at the unnamed Ump as she begs for help.
« Can you stay around? » asked the referee. « Because Giorgi’s father is very crazy and I want someone (close). »
The hard hitting Giorgi has had an up and down career and reached number 26 in the world, but never made the leap into that create the highest level of sport. The 29-year-old is currently in 86th place.
Camila Giorgi’s father repeatedly joins the conversation with the chair referee. Honestly, that’s awkward to look at.
It’s not the first controversy surrounding Sergio. Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko claimed he deliberately distracted her during a 2017 game at Wimbledon. « I was just trying to focus on my game and be on the pitch, » Ostapenko said after hers Victory over Giorgi. “It was just before my serve when someone started coughing. I think it’s a bit, as you say, unsporting. You’re at such a high level and the tournament like Wimbledon, a Grand Slam, I think people have to understand where they are. «
