The strength of security at the Townsville RAAF base was about to come into question overnight after two separate violations of the military facility.
A Townsville Police spokesman confirmed they were investigating the theft of two vehicles and two uniforms from the RAAF base fire station at an unknown date.
According to reports, one of the stolen vehicles (presumably an orange Ford hatchback) attempted to re-enter the base at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, with the driver using the owner’s ID and wearing a full flight service (dark blue uniform).
A manhunt for the thief was started after the vehicle was near Brown and Hurley, Ingham Rd.
In another incident, security met a young man who was wandering around the RAAF base at around 3 a.m.
The youth was taken into custody and told security they had come from a nearby party in Garbutt.
Police said nothing was stolen and the youth was discovered « fairly quickly » as he was on high alert after the cars were stolen.
