CM – The three second call that saved the boatswain’s life

A three-second distress call may have saved the life of a 54-year-old father, but tragically, his 48-year-old wife died after the couple’s boat capsized on Saturday night.

The couple went on a fishing trip to the northern tip of Mud Island on Saturday afternoon and faced some dangerous weather conditions on the way home.

Senior Sergeant Mitch Gray said the dangerous conditions had become too difficult for the tiny Quintrex 440 Renegade tin can.

« As they were making their way home, the weather hit and picked up a series of waves over the stern of the boat that took them into the water, » said Snr Sgt Gray.

« They came near Brisbane Harbor, they could actually see the rock face and a big wave broke over the spine and capsized the ship and they both got into the water. »

A family member received a three-second call from the man who said the boat was capsizing before the call ended.

Police started a large-scale search from 7pm on Saturday to noon on Sunday and found the man holding on to the bow of the sunken boat between Moreton and Mud Island.

After more than 14 hours since the phone call, the man was brought to safety by a rescue helicopter 500 at around 9.45 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The 48-year-old woman slipped out of the boat overnight in the harsh conditions and her body was found by police around noon.

Senior Sergeant Mitch Gray said he was glad he found the man, but the recent string of incidents in the Bay Area has put a strain on him and the community.

« I think you get the regrets of the search and rescue coordinators, it doesn’t suit you that you threw all sorts of things at it and found no one, » said Snr-Sgt Gray.

« You never forget and it feels like you’ve failed knowing you’ve done your best job, but not bringing someone home to your family really affects you and our team. »
