The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will decide on Friday whether Pfizer / BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine should be approved for 12 to 15 year olds, the EU regulator said.

In the event Once approved, the vaccine would be the first to receive the green light from the EMA to be given to young people in the European Union of 27 countries.

The EMA will hold a press conference on Friday to “reflect the outcome of an extraordinary meeting of their Committee on Medicinal Products for Human Use (…) on the pediatric indications of the vaccine.

EMA Executive Director Emer Cooke announced in early May that the Amsterdam-based regulator would accelerate the assessment of the data submitted for approval by vaccine developers for this age group.

Cooke informed European newspapers on May 11th that the EMA had received the data from Pfizer / BioNTech and that the agency (the a Also waiting for “data from clinical trials and the study in Canada”) intends to “speed up” their assessment.

In mid-May, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, asked countries to vaccinate Children and adolescents who are less susceptible to the disease should stop Covid-19.

Dr. Tedros is instead supposed to donate those doses to the Covax system, which aims to distribute coronavirus vaccines to poor countries.

This ethical issue is likely to re-emerge (as was the case when the Pfizer vaccine was released for people over 16 Years), the vaccine should be approved for 12-15 year olds on Friday.

Meanwhile, Belgium announced that it would be giving the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus single-dose vaccine to people under the age of 41 after death to discontinue a woman vaccinated with him.
