WINTERSVILLE – The American Legion Riders of Stevens-Christian Memorial Post # 557 organized the seventh annual Memorial Brick Run on May 15.

The Brick Run started in Wintersville in the Post’s picnic shelter, and the Legion Riders left the lot shortly after 10 a.m. This was followed by the truck with the memorial stones and a chartered “Honor Bus” that carried a dozen veterans and representatives of the Tri-State Young Marines from Weirton.

After a stop at West End Pizza in Malvern, the caravan continued to the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton, Ohio. « Many police stations stopped traffic along the way so that the caravan that accompanied the memorial stones could stay together, » said Wendy Barr, a volunteer with the Tri-State Young Marines.

« This beautiful ceremony began with the Invocation to Wendell Keyser, the tri-state Young Marines Color Guard, who showcased our nation’s colors, and the national anthem was performed by Michele Wisniewski, Navy veteran and founder of the Voices of Honor, « noted Barr.

Der May 15 was Armed Forces Day and 33 memorial stones were placed in memory of members of the American Legion from various posts. « Each name on each brick was read out and carried with our nation’s flag next to it on the service flag of the military branch he or she served, » explained Barr, adding that some of the bricks were worn by family members who were present. « What a fine day to honor and remember those who served, » she commented.

The ceremony ended with a 21-round salute from the American Legion Honor Guard Post 557 with » Taps ”and the echo“ Taps ”by Jay Shelton and Mike Bongart.

The Memorial Brick Run takes place every year on Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May. Barr pointed out that it wasn’t a poker run, but an escorted drive to the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park to the brick factory. Drivers or groups of drivers can choose their own route home or for a subsequent dinner. All proceeds will go to local charities and organizations.

Representatives from the Tri-State Young Marines shared their thoughts on being a part of the special event.

The Tri-State Young Marines, according to their website, are a national youth program for boys and girls ages 8 through high school that focuses on leadership, citizenship through community service, self-discipline, and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle .
