Promoter Eddie Hearn has just signed the UK’s biggest boxing deal ever with DAZN, and Belfast Tommy McCarthy is in the best position to make money.

McCarthy, the European cruiserweight champion, finds himself in the right place at the right time when he risks his belt against Chris Billam Smith at this summer’s Fight Camp event in Hearn’s garden. Billam Smith’s Commonwealth title, along with the British belt, will also be at stake if they clash in one of three consecutive Fight Camp shows starting July 31st.

After successfully defending the European title against Alexandru Jur Last month, the Belfast signed with Matchroom boss Hearn who believes the McCarthy-Billam Smith winner will advance to a world title.

McCarthy said, “It’s a huge opportunity for me. I’ve always dreamed of becoming a world star and this new deal Eddie has with DAZN gives me that chance. It has always been the case that every fighter wanted to be with Sky, but now everything has been taken to a new level with this DAZN deal.

“Everything seems to fit in with my career. Carl Frampton always said I should fight in America because the Americans love me – a tall black man with a big Belfast accent. I don’t think Americans even realize that there are blacks in Ireland!

« In Belfast you always need a flagship fighter and this is my chance to become a star and lead the way. »

Promoter Hearn, whose Matchroom company had a 25-year boxing relationship with Sky, believes that streaming the Matchroom shows on the DAZN app around the world will increase the opportunities for British fighters during the term of the five-year contract that he with the new platform.

“We needed a broadcaster that would invest at a level that would allow us to match our plan for boxing in the UK in terms of the schedule we want to set in terms of appearance of production … established global streaming giants in DAZN who have already invested heavily in boxing in the US with us, « said Hearn.

On the Irish scene, Hearn added, » The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are two key markets that are very mature and very knowledgeable … I think with the size of the battle nights we are creating, they have to play a serious role. ”flashy name.

« Katie Taylor is a big name in the Republic of Ireland and DAZN has seen a great response to her fights … it would be a great shame for her to end her career without fighting in Ireland. »

With Michael Conlan connected to ESPN through promoter Bob Arum, it is clear that someone has a chance to spark DAZN’s interest in Belfast, and McCarthy is at the head of the line.

Hearn added, « Tommy against Chris Billam Smith is a very good example of the line-up of DAZN. It’s not a main event, but it’s a really good British, Commonwealth and European title fight with two guys trying to get a world title. (WBO Champion) Lawrence Okolie versus Tommy is a fight that could work there. ”
