Tottenham survived in horror after losing a 2-0 lead at Wolves to prevail on penalties in the Carabao Cup.
Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Conor Coady missed the penalty shoot-out when Spurs progressed 3-2 after a 2-2 draw at Molineux.
They almost let the game go through after Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele only got them for Dendoncker and Ndombele Daniel Podence had been responsible for raising the level of the hosts.
Successive defeats in the Premier League to Crystal Palace and Chelsea and a draw at Rennes in the Europa Conference League had slowed the Spurs victory under Nuno Espirito Santo.
But last season’s runner-up reached the fourth round before the North London Derby on Sunday with Arsenal.
The Wolves continue to fight for results under Bruno Lage and their night started sc Bad, when Yerson Mosquera’s debut lasted just eight minutes before he was carried away with a suspected thigh injury.
Coady replaced him but was caught by Ndombele at the Spurs opener just five minutes later.
The formidable Oliver Skipp won a crunch with Neves and Ndombele’s heavy ball contact let the ball run free for Coady.
There seemed little danger, but Ndombele stormed his clearance to speed into the area, spin Willy Boly and head under John Ruddy roll.
Nine minutes later the score was 2-0 when Skipp interrupted the game again and Dele Alli’s perfect through ball made Kane clear to find the bottom corner.

Spurs threatened to open Wolves at will and Alli added almost a third before running out of space while Giovani Lo Celso slipped if he was well placed.
The hosts were comfortably second best, however Molineux became restless and shot back a goal seven minutes before the break when Dendoncker headed into a corner from Rayan Ait-Nouri.
Out of the blue, the Wolves had given themselves a lifeline with their first home goal of the season and were few surprisingly canceled.
But Ndombele, who had scored his first goal in nine months, chased a second and he dug over from an acute angle to highlight the fragility of the wolves in the back.
Adama Traore, who was im Sommer was wanted by the Spurs, replaced the ineffective Fabio Silva at break and the hosts immediately went on the hunt for an equalizer, but their demands for penalties were ignored after Ndombele Hwang Hee-chan found the Stü-surplus rmers caught.
Ruddy then saved from Kane when the striker tried to smuggle the ball past him, but was almost embarrassed when he fumbled a routine stop from Ndombele and skimmed the ball to save his blush.
Ndombele was guilty of losing the ball to Hwang, and Dendoncker fed Podence to confidently beat Pierluigi Gollini.
After the comeback, the Wolves had to rely on Ruddy to level it when Son Heung- Kane’s cross hit.
Penalties threatened, but Neves almost won it for Wolves when his deflected shot hit the crossbar two minutes from time.
But neither side could find a winner and Neves sent his Penalty missed before Gollini saved from Dendoncker.
Ruddy stopped Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s efforts, but Coady hit the crossbar and sent Spurs through.

Aaron Connolly struck twice to secure Brighton’s spot in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Swansea 2-0.
Arsenal moved into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable win over the spirited League One club AFC Wimbledon.
