The California chain, known for its iconic following and affordable healthy food, is coming to the area. The Lower Allen Township Development Authority announced today that Trader Joe’s will open in the Lower Allen Commons, a 14-acre complex under construction on what used to be Bon Ton.
The store is expected to open at a location in the early 2022 Opened near the Route 11/15 interchange and Route 581 near the Capital City Mall.
In early 2019, the agency bought the property, formerly called the Capital City Commons, for about $ 8 million to support the redevelopment of the site and ensure that the site would not stand vacant for years, as has been the case with other former large retail stores.

Trader Joe’s is one of the most sought-after grocery stores in the country. The closest ones operate at State College in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Towson, Maryland.
Its quirky atmosphere, low prices, and unique products like Cookie Butter, Unexpected Cheddar, Everything But the Bagel Sesame Spice, Joe Joe’s Cookies, and Thai Lime & Chili Cashews make for a cult following.
Joe Coulombe opened the first Trader Joe’s Stores and named them after the image of the South Pacific. In 1979 it was sold to the German food mogul Theo Albrecht, whose family is behind the supermarket company Aldi Nord in Germany.
In contrast to Super Walmarts, Giant and Weis Market, Trader Joe’s stores operate on a small area. The Lower Allen Township Store will occupy 12,000 square feet.
Lower Allen Commons will also host a sports clip and the Good Feet Store. The agency said there is also a sales contract for a SpringHill Suites, a Marriott-branded hotel, to be developed on the premises.
