(Manzanita, Oregon) – The Oregon Coast Range and Willapa Hills on the Washington Coast are experiencing a variety of wintry problems and the likelihood of snow and ice conditions even on the beaches – including the south coast – is increasing.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for the Oregon Coast Range from approximately Florence to the Washington coast tomorrow (Friday), and then another Saturday through Sunday.
There may be heavy snowfall above 1,000 feet affecting various parts of the Coast Range peaks along Highway 26, Highway 18, and Highway 6. A total of 6 to 12 inches can be gathered on Friday.
« Travel could be very difficult due to snow and ice-covered roads and limited visibility, » the NWS said.
On Saturday and Sunday, the storm watch shows a lower amount of dust, up to about 6 inches of snow, the NWS said. But there could be a white Christmas for the south Washington coast and the north Oregon coast.
The coastal regions in central Oregon like Yachats or Lincoln City could stay in the rain, however, the NWS said.
« There could be higher amounts locally, especially just a few hundred feet above the ocean, » said the NWS. “In the Coast and Cascade Ranges there will likely be a continuation of snow from Saturday, but it will intensify and the snow depth will decrease. Snow depths will easily reach 600 ft overnight through Sunday and then hit the surface in all areas by later Sunday morning. In fact, the low temperature for Sunday is unlikely to come in until later in the morning due to the steady south trend of the arctic cold air basin. For this reason, any precipitation will fall as snow. ”
However, Saturday night and Sunday are likely to cause quite a bit of snow in the valley floor, which will again have an impact on journeys to and from the coasts of both countries. Later in the week, more snow is predicted to a depth of 100 feet or less. At this point, this storm system begins to hit cities on the southern Oregon coast such as Bandon, Reedsport, or Port Orford. Snow is currently in the NWS forecast for this lower half of the coast from Monday through at least Thursday.
The NWS said it was cautious and expected weather delays while traveling over the holidays.
« Be prepared for winter driving conditions with snow- and ice-covered roads and very limited visibility, » said the NWS. “If you have to travel, slow down and allow plenty of extra time to get to your destination. Keep snow chains and a winter survival kit with a flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. «
