The leading Turkish players like Hakan Calhanolgu and Burak Yilmaz will be more than 1,400 km away from their capital when they face Wales in the European Championship game in Baku on Wednesday.
Despite the distance, the encounter will be closer feel like a home game for the Crescent Stars due to the historical, cultural and linguistic connections between the country and the oil-rich state of Azerbaijan with a view of the Caspian Sea.
In the days before the game, a second one for both sides of the tournament, Turkish memorabilia were sold in all souvenir shops, while in the « City of Winds » flags were waving from homes, shops and offices.
