Actor, director and producer Tyler Perry had strong words for America at the 2021 Academy Awards. Perry, who won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, condemned the hatred in his short but powerful acceptance speech. « I hope we all teach our children to reject hate, » he said. He received applause from the crowd for saying, « I refuse to hate anyone because they’re Asian, Mexican, or black, white, or LGBTQ. » He accepted his award and said: « I want to dedicate it to everyone who wants to stand in the middle … to reject hatred, to reject blanket judgment, this is also for you. » You can see the entire 53 second speech if you missed it.

The price is named after the Danish-American film actor and humanitarian Jean Hersholt. It is issued regularly by the Academy, with voting limited to the AMPAS Board of Governors. So far there have been 39 winners, including Angelina Jolie 2013, Oprah Winfrey 2011, Audrey Hepburn 1992 and Frank Sinatra 1970. In 2019, Geena Davis was awarded the prize for her work with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media for the representation of women in Hollywood Increase.
Perry was honored with the award for his humanitarian efforts during the pandemic. According to Variety, « Perry was one of the first major Hollywood players to tackle the pandemic directly and develop Camp Quarantine, a multi-step plan to get production up and running. » He also helped destigmatize the vaccine by putting it in front of the camera and talking to doctors.

Perry was awarded the award by Viola Davis, and his speech is undoubtedly an important reality check America needs. While his candidacy for political office seems like a distant dream, we can’t say we’re surprised to see the calls after the moving speech.
