PASADENA – Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the UCLA soccer team (2-0) separated in the second half of the 16th.

The Bruins won two home games without a conference earlier in the season after losing the first six games without a conference with Chip Kelly as coach.

UCLA received a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason poll in mid-August but could get more after beating No. 16, one of eight teams that lost in Week 1.

« I don’t care, » said Kelly when asked if this team should be counted after the win. “It doesn’t matter in September. I think the important thing is that they played really well tonight, you don’t have to write a ranking for these guys. ”

Thompson-Robinson completed 9 of 16 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns against the 16th ranked Tigers. The Bruins scored 10 or more points in each of the final three quarters after being disqualified in the first quarter.

« I think everyone in the locker room was very confident about going into this game, » said Thompson-Robinson. “Everyone expected to win this game. That confirmed our expectations and we have even more ahead of us.  »

While the Bruins were happy to beat the first of the six ranked opponents on their schedule, the four-year-old quarterback believes there is still a lot to do in bye week.

« I still think, even though we won this game, there is a lot to improve, » said Thompson-Robinson. « I was still fluctuating, still had sacks going backwards, so some things still had to be cleaned up, but we will definitely enjoy these while we can. »

He also threw an interception against LSU cornerback Eli Ricks, a former Mater Dei player, in the second quarter. The quarterback was also sacked four times for a 36 yard loss.

The defense proved it could bend but not break, with multiple defenses against the LSU offensive.

UCLA kept the Tigers goalless in the first quarter, but enabled the game’s first touchdown when LSU quarterback Max Johnson made a 3-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kayshon Boutte in the second quarter with 12:34 minutes finished before the end.

The Bruins quickly responded to the Tigers’ touchdown and scored a touchdown on the first game of the following drive. Thompson-Robinson completed a 75 yard pass to tight end Greg Dulcich.

Dulcich finished the night with three catches and 117 yards. Receiver Kyle Philips helped get the game out of reach by catching a 45-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Johnson ended the night with 26 of 46 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns for LSU. UCLA linebacker Caleb Johnson intercepted one of Johnson’s passes, returned it for 34 yards, giving the offense a good field position.

The Bruins converted sales into points, with Thompson-Robinson throwing a 14-yard touchdown on receiver Chase Cota.

Zach Charbonnet stormed for 117 yards and a touchdown at 11 carries. Brittain Brown stormed for 78 yards and a touchdown at 14 carries.

« Our running game was great, it was always great, » said Thompson-Robinson. “Coach (DeShaun) Foster is doing a great job there. Great players appear in great games. While I didn’t have many options, we had to maximize what we got. That’s the big thing I talked about last week. I felt like we did that tonight, made pieces that needed to be made, and emerged victorious.  »

The LSU offensive struggled to achieve a similar success in the running game. The Bruins defense held the Tigers backcourt at 25 carries over to 48 yards.

The Bruins will host Fresno State for the final home game of the season on September 18 after a week of bye
