CM – UCLA is taking control early and blowing out northern Florida

Tyger Campbell's solid all-round play is part of a balanced effort as the runner-up Bruins build a 22 point half-time lead and roll to a 98-63 win.

UCLA point guard Tyger Campbell caught a quick swing pass from David Singleton and was ready to shoot but didn’t when Dorian James of North Florida ran on him from six feet.

Campbell faked – um Let James Fly by – took a quick dribble to put his feet back, then buried his third 3-pointer of the first half. It was an indication of the hard work Campbell put into his 3-point shot this season.

But the cool nature in which Campbell did it speaks more to his confidence than anything else than him a perfect 4-for-4 shot from the 3-point line to help UCLA finish North Florida, 98-63, at the Pauley Pavilion Wednesday night, the team’s opening four-game home.

Campbell shot last season only 18 for 72 (25%) out of the loop. When it got into the game – albeit with a small sample – it was 7:14. After Wednesday’s performance, he’s 11:18 (61%). He finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and no ball losses in 26 minutes.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. led the Bruins with 20 points and eight rebounds. Johnny Juzang scored 17 (with three 3-pointers) and Jules Bernard added 15 points and five rebounds. Myles Johnson scored just five points but grabbed 13 rebounds.

UCLA dominated the glass, beating North Florida 54-24, including 24 offensive rebounds. The last time the Bruins had such a feat on the offensive glass was in 2008 when they had 25 offensive rebounds in a 72:63 home loss to USC.

After a slight dent in defensive expectations against Long Beach State on Monday evening – even after a 21-point win – the Bruins (4-0) left no doubt against the Ospreys (0-5).

A Campbell 3-pointer gave UCLA a 32-24 lead before Jaquez had a breakaway dunk and 3-pointer in a row that made the result 41-26, forcing North Florida to call a timeout. After the North Florida timeout, Jaylen Clark had a layup and Juzang hit a 3-pointer in a 19-2 run that resulted in a 55-33 lead at half time.

UCLA shot 6 for in the first half 10 behind the arch and 23 for 46 from the box.

It was really similar in the second half, with a defensive effort that kept North Florida on only 37% of the shooting total. Campbell hit his fourth 3-pointer in the second half to take the lead at 78-52 with 10 : To inflate 48 minutes lead. A Clark dunk at the 4:49 mark made it 91-58.

In addition to recreation, UCLA dominated almost every category. The Bruins were colorized 50-30 and had a 30-6 advantage on second chance points to go with eight steals.

The Bruins will now focus on their trip to Las Vegas, around Monday night to compete against Bellarmine before they come to the showdown next Tuesday in the T-Mobile Arena with the top placed Gonzaga.
