THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Elamaram Kareem, the chairman of the CPM in Rajya Sabha, has written to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Essential Defense Services Ordinance 2021 (EDSO). Kareem, a member of the CPM central committee, also described the EDSO as undemocratic and anti-constitutional. Under the regulation, a strike in the sector is illegal and can result in dismissal without investigation, arrest or detention.
Kareem said the Union government issued the regulation when the major associations of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) announced an indefinite strike from July 26th in protest against the government’s decision to corporation the OFB. Kareem tried to urgently withdraw the EDSO in 2021 and urged the Defense Minister to enter into dialogue with the OFB staff and step back from the decision to privatize Ordnance Factors.
