Police have charged a 22-year-old man after a laser light hit a police helicopter several times on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

The police helicopter was flying over the Rockingham area when it was hit by a blue laser light several times around 9:15 p.m. The helicopter crew was able to track the laser light to a residence on Waimea Road in Safety Bay.

The Regional Operations Group officers were escorted into the residence, where they arrested a 22-year-old man and found a blue laser pointer under a bed. The arrested man was taken to Rockingham Police Station for questioning.

A 22-year-old man from Safety Bay was accused of « scaring or alerting people in transport or others with lasers or lights » and is due to be released on Friday the Appear before Rockingham Magistrates Court on May 28, 2021.

A spokesman for the WA Police Force said laser pointers are extremely dangerous objects that could be aimed at an aircraft.

« Laser lights can illuminate the cabin of an aircraft and instantly distress pilots who, in most cases, must immediately evade to maintain safe control of the aircraft they are flying.
