NEW YORK: The start of the game at the US Open was postponed Thursday, one day after torrential rains and torrential rains from Hurricane Ida strong winds hit the site, flooded roads and interrupted a game that was being played under one roof.

The strong storm caused the National Weather Service to declare a flash flood emergency / new-york-city-mayor-declares-state-emergency-after-record-breaking-rain- 09/02/2021 in New York City for the first time in history, with at least nine deaths in the region.

Fans and players faced challenges in order to to Flushing Meadows in Queens, where the last Grand Slam of the year takes place. Almost all New York City subway lines were shut down due to overnight flooding, although some service was restored Thursday morning and widespread road closures remained.

The three major subway lines that serve the New York area , were either suspended or delayed.

In Midtown Manhattan, where most of the players hang out during the tournament, players, tournament staff and media representatives lined up in the morning sun to wait for shuttles to take them to the tennis center. The drive to Queens took more than two hours in the late morning due to detours due to storm damage.

In the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday, strong winds blew sideways rain on the pitch despite the retractable roof, forcing Diego Schwartzman to defeat Kevin Anderson at Arthur Ashe Stadium after a long delay.

The pouring rain turned pedestrian zones into rivers, in which debris flew around and umbrellas were barely able to withstand the strong winds.

The second round match between former champions Angelique Kerber and Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, originally scheduled to start after Schwartzman and Anderson, has been postponed to Thursday along with dozens of other games that couldn’t be completed due to the rain.

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Ash Barty will be on Thursday play their second round matches.
