The National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) announced Wednesday that it was opening a safety probe for a fatal Tesla crash on May 5 in California amid growing concerns about the automaker’s driver assistance systems.
A Tesla crashed into an overturned truck on a freeway near Fontana, California, killing the driver of the Tesla and injuring the truck driver and a motorist who stopped to help, the California Highway Patrol said.
The report on the highway patrol did not state whether the Tesla was operating on autopilot, its semi-autonomous driving system, at the time of the accident. The Mack truck had crashed and overturned five minutes earlier, blocking two lanes of the freeway, the report said.
Police in Texas said last month they believed a fatal accident occurred on April 17th in the Near Houston where no one was in the driver’s seat. A preliminary government report on Monday said footage from the owner’s security cameras showed the owner entering the driver’s seat and the front passenger entering the front passenger seat.
